Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz issued today, Wednesday, the first decision, the day after his meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Israel.
Gantz’s office said, “The minister approved confidence-building measures that include transferring tax payments to the Palestinian Authority, granting hundreds of permits to prominent Palestinian merchants and officials, and approving residency status for thousands of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.”
Yesterday, Tuesday, the Hebrew media showed video reports of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ car leaving the home of Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz in Tel Aviv.
Minister Hussein Al-Sheikh also announced, earlier, the end of a meeting between Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz.
In a statement on Twitter, Sheikh said, “President Mahmoud Abbas met with Minister Benny Gantz, where the meeting discussed the importance of creating a political horizon that leads to a political solution in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions.”
Al-Sheikh stressed that the meeting also dealt with the tense field situation due to the practices of the settlers, as well as many security, economic and humanitarian issues.
For its part, a Hamas spokesman, met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz, considering the meeting unacceptable and derogatory from the national spirit.
Qassem said in a statement on Twitter, “The meeting of PA President Mahmoud Abbas with Zionist War Minister Benny Gantz is condemned and rejected by the patriotic party, and deviates from the national spirit.
He added, “This meeting coincided with the settlers’ attack on our people in the West Bank, which increases the severity of the PA leadership’s crime, and constitutes a stab at the intifada in the occupied West Bank.”
Qassem considered that the authority’s behavior by holding meetings with the leaders of the Hebrew state deepens the Palestinian political division and complicates the Palestinian situation, and on the other hand encourages some parties in the region wishing to normalize with the state of “Israel”, and weakens the Palestinian position rejecting normalization.
