Smart ball and wireless charging

Adidas has unveiled the official match ball “Adidas Trionda” for the World Cup, featuring a high-precision motion sensor operating at a frequency of up to 500Hz, allowing the ball’s movement data to be recorded hundreds of times per second.

The ball relies on an internal sensor unit and a rechargeable battery, and is charged wirelessly before matches to ensure the system continues working throughout the game, including extra time when needed. Thus, the ball has become part of an integrated technological system that transmits data in real time during play.

Why charge it?

Charging the ball is not about powering it as an independent electronic device but rather to operate the internal sensor responsible for collecting data and sending it to refereeing and analysis systems.

This sensor detects the moment of player contact with the ball with high temporal precision, along with measuring speed, spin, and direction of movement, then sends this information directly to systems linked to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) and semi-automated offside technology.

FIFA reports indicate that this data helps speed up refereeing decisions and increase their accuracy during sensitive situations within matches.

How does it work?

Inside the ball, a precise sensor chip continuously records data and transmits it to external analysis systems linked to cameras and digital tracking technologies.

This data is used to determine the exact moment of a pass or shot with great accuracy, and also contributes to supporting semi-automated offside technology by linking the moment the ball is touched with the players’ positions on the field.

The systems also assist in reviewing some contentious situations, such as handballs or close interferences, in addition to building three-dimensional models of the ball’s path during the match.

A new generation

“Adidas Trionda” represents a new generation of smart footballs, featuring only four panels to improve aerodynamic stability during flight, along with the internal sensor connected to the refereeing system.

The ball relies on a small rechargeable battery, while the electronic chip weighs only about 14 grams, which Adidas confirms does not affect the ball’s balance or the players’ feel during play.

This design aims to combine modern technical requirements while preserving the traditional characteristics of the ball in terms of movement and control.
