A Difficult and Painful Day for Israelis: Senior Officials Mourn Fallen Soldiers
The Israeli military announced on Wednesday morning the deaths of seven soldiers and the injury of 16 others from the Combat Engineering Battalion 605 during a military operation in the city of Khan Younis, located in the southern Gaza Strip. The casualties occurred following the detonation of an improvised explosive device (IED) that targeted an armored personnel carrier of the “Puma” model.
According to a statement by the Israeli army, the explosion was caused by a device planted by armed Palestinian individuals. The incident led to the vehicle catching fire, resulting in the deaths of the soldiers inside despite efforts to extinguish the flames using a military bulldozer.
Later, the army identified one of the deceased as Staff Sergeant Alon Davidov, 21, from Kiryat Yam. He served as a combat medic in the same battalion.

Senior Israeli officials expressed sorrow over the loss of the seven soldiers, describing the incident as a painful tragedy. President Isaac Herzog stated: “A deeply painful morning. We have lost seven of our dear sons in the battle of Khan Younis.” He added: “The fighting in Gaza is intense, the burden is heavy, and our hearts are with the families of the fallen,” according to his statement.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the day as a “difficult one for the people of Israel,” noting that the soldiers “fell during a mission to dismantle Hamas and rescue hostages.” He extended condolences to the bereaved families.
Defense Minister Yoav Gallant wrote on the social platform X (formerly Twitter) that the soldiers “fell bravely during their mission to defend the State of Israel” and conveyed his sympathy to the victims’ families.
Political Consensus in Response
Opposition leader Yair Lapid referred to the incident as a “major disaster,” emphasizing that the events in Khan Younis resulted in the deaths of seven fighters. “Our hearts are with their families,” he said.
National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir expressed grief in a post on X, stating: “With a heavy heart, we mourn the fallen fighters of the engineering battalion, who fought and died in defense of Israel and in efforts to recover the hostages.” He added, “Their heroism will not be forgotten,” according to his statement.
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich also expressed sorrow, saying: “We lost heroes from the engineering battalion who displayed extraordinary courage. The loss is painful on both a personal and national level.”
Incident Background
Preliminary investigations indicated that the armored vehicle was operating as part of a ground force during a field operation when the explosive device was triggered. Military sources noted that attempts to recover the burning vehicle involved using a D9 bulldozer to cover it with soil before it was eventually extracted from the area.
