Abu Dhabi Talks: Russia–Ukraine Second Round Resumes February 5

The second round of trilateral negotiations on resolving the Ukraine conflict began in the UAE capital, Abu Dhabi, with delegations from Russia, Ukraine, and the United States participating.

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that hosting the talks “reflects Abu Dhabi’s balanced relations with the three parties and the international confidence in its role to facilitate dialogue and provide a supportive environment for constructive negotiations.”

Media reports indicated that the first day concluded without further details on the proceedings or outcomes, except for a Ukrainian official describing the talks as “productive.” Discussions are scheduled to resume on Thursday, February 5.

Rubio: Partial Progress, Caution

U.S. Secretary of State and National Security Advisor Marco Rubio stated that the list of outstanding issues has significantly narrowed, while noting that the most complex matters remain on the agenda.

Rubio warned against expecting rapid results, emphasizing that progress may not be immediately visible until a genuine breakthrough is achieved, and confirming that Washington is prepared to remain engaged in the negotiation process “for a year” if necessary.

Current Round Agenda

The talks focus on Ukraine’s withdrawal from the Donbas region and related security guarantees. The current round is set to last two days, with participants hoping to build on outcomes from the first round held on January 23–24, enhancing the prospects for broader understandings in resolving the conflict.
