African Union Emphasizes the Addis Ababa Charter 2025 Following Ceasefire in Tripoli

The African Union has underscored the importance of disarmament and supporting efforts to restore public order, welcoming the ceasefire in the Libyan capital, Tripoli. This was stated in an official communiqué issued by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssef, who expressed deep concern over the recent armed clashes and the resulting human casualties and material damage.

The statement called on all parties to refrain from any actions or statements that could escalate the fragile security situation in Tripoli, emphasizing the need to uphold the rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression within the framework of international law. The African Union also stressed the importance of engaging in an inclusive political process aimed at ending Libya’s prolonged transitional phase, paving the way for peace and sustainable development.

The African Union reaffirmed its full support for Libya, urging all parties to adhere to the National Reconciliation Charter signed in Addis Ababa in February 2025, considering it a fundamental framework for achieving political and social stability in the country.
