After 15 Years Under House Arrest, Iran Lifts Restrictions on Politician Mehdi Karroubi

Tehran (ISNA) – Iranian authorities lifted the house arrest imposed on former presidential candidate Mehdi Karroubi on Monday.
Hussein Karroubi, Mehdi Karroubi’s son, confirmed the end of his father’s 15-year house arrest, stating that authorities have not informed him of any restrictions following the decision. In an interview with Iran’s ISNA news agency, he said, “As of today, based on an order from the head of the judiciary, my father’s restrictions have been lifted.” However, he noted that security officers will remain stationed at his father’s residence for security reasons until April 10, after which they will leave.
Mehdi Karroubi ran in the 2009 Iranian presidential election, which was won by former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Following allegations of electoral fraud, Karroubi and other candidates disputed the results, leading to nationwide protests. In response, Iranian authorities placed Karroubi under house arrest without formal charges or a clear legal justification.
