Ahmad al-Shara: Any Chaos in Syria Will Affect the Entire World

Transitional Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara affirmed that any chaos within Syria will impact the entire world, not just neighboring countries. He pointed out that both regional and European nations are interested in Syria’s stability following the fall of the former regime.

In an interview with The New York Times, al-Shara emphasized that any military presence in the country must comply with local laws and must not pose a threat to other nations.

Regarding relations with Russia, he stated that the Syrian government has not received offers to replace its current weapons, most of which are of Russian origin. He stressed the importance of upholding long-standing agreements between the two countries in the fields of food and energy.

Al-Shara also called on Washington to work on lifting sanctions imposed on Syria, noting that these measures targeted the former regime. He emphasized the need to discuss certain terms of those sanctions.

He reaffirmed Syria’s commitment to preventing its territory from being used for activities that threaten other countries, acknowledging the military presence of both Turkey and Russia within Syrian borders.

As for the coastal region, al-Shara said, “My government is committed to maintaining peace in the coastal area, and we will hold those responsible for acts of violence accountable.”
