Ahmad al-Shara Signs Draft Syrian Constitution: Key Points

The Syrian transitional president, Ahmad al-Shara, has signed the draft of the constitutional declaration, which was handed over by the Constitutional Drafting Committee.

After signing, al-Shara expressed his hope that this would mark a new era for Syria, a fresh start for its people, and the first step toward construction and development.

The Constitutional Drafting Committee issued a statement outlining the main points of the draft:

Guaranteeing property rights and women’s rights to education, work, and political participation.

Emphasizing the commitment of the state to territorial unity and respecting cultural diversities.

Maintaining the dual judicial system (administrative and ordinary courts), while acknowledging that transitioning to a unified judiciary during the transitional phase will face significant challenges.

Absolute separation of powers, with the executive authority resting with Ahmad al-Shara during the transitional phase.

Defining the transitional period as lasting five years.

Approval from the National Security Council is required to declare a state of emergency, and its extension must be approved by the People’s Assembly.

The current Constitutional Court will be dissolved and replaced by a temporary court that will operate according to the previous law.
