Al-Hol Camp after Al-Shaddadi Prison: Syrian Army Says SDF Left Camp Guard

Syrian Army: SDF Left Al-Hol Camp Guard

The Operations Authority of the Syrian Arab Army told SANA that the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) abandoned the guard at Al-Hol Camp, allowing detainees to leave. The authority noted that the army will coordinate with internal security forces to enter and secure the area, emphasizing its commitment to protecting the Kurdish population and maintaining stability and security in the camp.

Meanwhile, the SDF reported “intense clashes” between its members and Damascus-affiliated factions around the camp, which hosts thousands of families linked to the Islamic State group, amid ongoing negotiations with the International Coalition to hand over the camp safely to Syrian authorities.

Al-Hol Camp is the largest camp in northeastern Syria, housing families of foreign fighters and civilians associated with the Islamic State. Since 2019, the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria has called on relevant countries to repatriate their nationals from the camp.

Separately, the Syrian army has increased its deployments around Al-Aqtan Prison north of Raqqa, which holds IS detainees, aiming to prevent disorder or escape attempts and ensure stability, following the resolution of the prison crisis under an agreement between the Syrian army and the SDF.
