Amnesty International Issues New Statement on Developments in Syria

Amnesty International today emphasized that the newly formed Syrian government must take immediate and concrete steps toward justice, truth, and reparations in order to address the country’s devastating legacy of human rights violations.

Kristin Beckerle, Deputy Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa at Amnesty International, stated: “To truly turn the page on the past, the Syrian government must uphold the rights to truth, justice, and reparations for all people in Syria.”

She added: “The country is facing tremendous challenges, yet there are fundamental pillars for building a new, more just Syria. These include ensuring accountability for crimes committed by all warring parties and providing compensation to victims and their families.”

Beckerle stressed the need for the new authorities to rebuild trust between the state and the Syrian people, warning that delays in achieving justice would only increase the risk of further bloodshed.

The organization also underscored that Syrian authorities must establish a mechanism to ensure thorough vetting of all government officials, military leaders, and other appointed figures suspected of criminal responsibility—including for crimes committed in the post-Assad era, such as massacres of Alawite civilians in Syria’s coastal regions—to prevent the recurrence of abuses and cycles of violence.
