Directorate of Antiquities and Museums in Syria Displays Contents of the “Gold Cave in Daraa” – Photos
The Directorate of Antiquities and Museums in Syria presented the initial findings from the site known in the media as the Gold Cave in Daraa, southern Syria.
This followed the widespread circulation of rumors claiming the presence of large quantities of ancient gold at the site. In a statement, the directorate explained that a field inspection confirmed the location to be a Roman-era burial chamber uncovered during excavation for a building foundation, noting that claims about a cave filled with gold were not supported by any documented evidence.
The directorate added that the inspection resulted in the discovery of several pottery artifacts linked to the Roman period, describing them as items of scientific and museum value commonly found in similar archaeological sites. It also confirmed that reports suggesting the presence of large amounts of gold were “inaccurate.” The statement noted that the relevant authorities secured the location immediately, while specialized teams continue documentation and archaeological studies in line with established scientific standards.

The directorate emphasized that Syria’s cultural heritage constitutes a national asset requiring careful protection. It noted that any verified archaeological discovery will be announced transparently through official channels. The statement also urged citizens to avoid circulating unverified information after large crowds gathered at the excavation site due to the initial rumor, which caused significant congestion before security forces intervened to maintain public safety.
