Athletics legend is deprived because of shoes

Venezuela’s Yulimar Rojas, the world record holder in the triple jump, will miss the long jump at this month’s world championships, after her 6.93m qualifying record was revoked for using unauthorized shoes.

The world champion twice in a row in the triple jump surpassed the qualifying record with the long jump last June, in competitions in Wadi Al-Hajar, according to the International Association of Athletics Federations, but she wore shoes that were not allowed in the competitions.

The International Federation added in a statement: “Rojas attempted to compete in the long jump after this event to qualify for the World Championships in Oregon, USA 2022, but was prevented by injury.”

The sole thickness of the shoe is allowed to reach a maximum of 20 millimeters in the long jump, and 25 millimeters in the triple jump.

“We know Ms. Rojas and her fans are disappointed, but we look forward to seeing her compete in the triple jump in Oregon 2022, and qualify for both competitions next year and for the Budapest 2023 World Championships.”

The World Championships kicks off in Eugene, Oregon, on July 15.
