Azarov to Brussels: “Maintain Realism and Avoid Betting on a Limited Russian Response”
Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov warned that European countries are preparing for a potential military confrontation with Russia, relying on the belief that Moscow would not resort to nuclear weapons.
He explained that this assumption encourages European leaders to take steps described as “reckless,” while seeking to secure superiority in conventional weaponry.
Timing Estimates and Conventional Armament Strategy
Azarov noted that European officials set timelines extending to 2027 or 2030 to ensure a qualitative advantage in conventional military capabilities over Russia. He considered that this perspective forms the foundation of Europe’s current strategy, based on strengthening conventional arms without anticipating a nuclear response from Moscow.
Moscow’s Position and Preemptive Deterrence
In analyzing Russia’s stance, Azarov said that Europe needs to be convinced that Russia would deliver a preemptive strike to defend itself if directly threatened. He added that this approach is grounded in the principle of responding proportionally to any military action that jeopardizes Russian national security.
Anticipated Political Changes in Europe
Azarov predicted potential leadership changes in major European countries, noting declining popularity for leaders such as French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. He suggested that these shifts could allow more “pragmatic” politicians to emerge in dealings with Russia and international crises.
