Azerbaijan Confirms Mediation Between Israel and Syria, Announces Energy Agreements with Damascus
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stated that his country is acting as a mediator between Israel and Syria, as part of broader efforts to support peace and stability in the Middle East.
In an interview published Wednesday by Al Arabiya English, Aliyev revealed that a meeting between Israeli and Syrian officials took place under Azerbaijani mediation. While he did not disclose the location of the meeting, media reports indicated it was held in the capital, Baku.
Aliyev emphasized that Azerbaijan’s primary objective is to promote regional stability and peace, underlining the importance of the country’s neutral and intermediary role in the region.
Azerbaijan Offers to Mediate Between Turkey and Israel
The Azerbaijani president also addressed the state of Turkey-Israel relations, noting that Baku had previously supported normalization efforts between the two countries. He added that both Ankara and Tel Aviv had appreciated Azerbaijan’s involvement.
“We are ready to contribute again to the restoration of ties between Turkey and Israel if asked to do so,” Aliyev said.
Four-Party Energy Agreement and Gas Supplies to Syria
Aliyev further stated that Azerbaijan is providing humanitarian assistance and energy support to Syria. He explained that Azerbaijani natural gas is already being delivered to Syrian territory under a quadrilateral agreement signed on July 12 by Azerbaijan, Turkey, Syria, and Qatar.
According to the agreement, 1.2 billion cubic meters of gas will be supplied, with the potential for increased volumes in the future. The first phase of the gas transfer project officially began on August 2, funded by Qatar. The project currently provides approximately 3.4 million cubic meters of gas per day to fuel gas-powered electricity generation plants in Syria.
Aliyev: Trump Deserves Nobel Peace Prize
At the conclusion of the interview, President Aliyev stated that former U.S. President Donald Trump “deserves” the Nobel Peace Prize, describing him as “a leader who seeks peace” and highlighting what he sees as Trump’s constructive role in regions such as the Caucasus, Africa, and Asia.
