Arab League supports ban on Hezbollah activities and reaffirms compliance with UN Resolution 1701
The Arab League Council at the ministerial level welcomed the Lebanese government’s decision to immediately ban all security and military activities of Hezbollah, declaring them outside the law.
This came during an emergency ministerial meeting of the Council at the level of foreign ministers, held Sunday under the chairmanship of the United Arab Emirates and at the request of Saudi Arabia, to discuss the issue of “protecting the sovereignty of Arab states and the integrity of their territories in light of Iranian attacks.”
The foreign ministers affirmed their support for Lebanon’s unity, sovereignty, and independence, stressing the need for the Lebanese state to extend its authority across all its territories to strengthen its constitutional institutions and maintain national security and stability. They emphasized that the monopoly on weapons should remain with the Lebanese army and official security forces, in line with the Lebanese constitution and relevant international resolutions, including UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and the Taif Agreement.
The Council called on active members of the international community to uphold international resolutions related to Lebanon and Palestine, including implementing a two-state solution, ensuring the independence of the State of Palestine along the June 4, 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, and enabling the Palestinian people to exercise their legitimate rights to promote peace and security in the region.
