Barcelona Advance to Champions League Semifinals Despite Loss to Borussia Dortmund
FC Barcelona suffered a surprising 3-1 defeat at the hands of Borussia Dortmund in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals, but still managed to secure a spot in the semifinals thanks to their dominant first-leg performance.
Playing at Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park, the home team came out strong and earned a penalty in the 11th minute, which Serhou Guirassy successfully converted to open the scoring.
The early goal gave Dortmund the momentum they needed to chase down the first-leg deficit. Guirassy struck again just four minutes into the second half, making it 2-0 and reigniting hopes of a dramatic comeback.
Barcelona responded quickly in an attempt to kill the game, and their pressure paid off when Ramy Bensebaini scored an own goal, putting Barcelona on the scoresheet.
Still pressing, Dortmund managed to add a third goal in the 76th minute, keeping the tension high. However, Barcelona successfully slowed the pace of the match in the final stages, preserving the 3-1 scoreline, which allowed them to progress on aggregate 5-3, having won the first leg 4-0.
Barcelona will now face the winner of the Bayern Munich vs. Inter Milan matchup, which will be decided on Wednesday, in the semifinals of the competition.
