Beirut Moves to Ease Tensions with Baghdad Following Lebanese President’s Remarks
The Director General of Lebanon’s General Security, Major General Hassan Shaqir, held talks with Iraqi officials to clarify President Joseph Aoun’s position on the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), according to Lebanese media sources.
Well-informed sources indicated that these communications have helped calm the situation, with expectations of an upcoming direct contact between the Lebanese and Iraqi presidents to clear up the misunderstanding, following media reactions to the statements.
Earlier, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry summoned the Lebanese ambassador to Baghdad, Ali Al-Habbhab, in response to President Aoun’s remarks rejecting the idea of “replicating the PMF experience in Iraq” as a model for integrating Hezbollah into the Lebanese Army.
