Breaking: Germany Officially Reopens Its Embassy in Damascus

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock officially reopened the German Embassy in the Syrian capital, Damascus, today (Thursday), after nearly 13 years of closure. Berlin has appointed diplomat Stefan Schnick as chargé d’affaires in Damascus.

The German Foreign Ministry stated that the diplomatic team managing the mission in Damascus is very small. It also clarified that consular affairs and visa applications will remain under the jurisdiction of the German Embassy in Beirut due to the ongoing security instability in Damascus.
