China or the West? Which Economic Cooperation Path Will Damascus Choose for the Future?
On Wednesday, March 26, Syrian Foreign Minister, Asad al-Shibani, emphasized Syria’s readiness to enhance cooperation with China during his meeting with a Chinese delegation led by Ambassador to Damascus, Shi Hongwei.
Both al-Shibani and the Chinese ambassador stressed the importance of strengthening the relationship between Syria and China in a way that serves the interests of both countries and promotes prosperity, progress, and peace.
The Syrian minister expressed his appreciation for China’s stance on the repeated Israeli incursions in southern Syria, confirming Syria’s willingness to strengthen cooperation in a way that serves the interests of the Syrian people.
For his part, the Chinese ambassador reiterated his country’s respect for Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence, and pledged China’s support to Syria during the transitional phase to overcome it successfully, without interfering in its internal affairs.
It is noted that China’s economic cooperation with the Global South is based on the principle of non-interference in internal affairs, which contrasts with Western cooperation, which often requires political conditions. How will Syria define its path in the coming period?
