Chinese Parliament removes 19 lawmakers, including nine military officers, ahead of annual session
The National People’s Congress of China (parliament) has removed 19 members, including nine military officers, one week before the start of its annual session scheduled for next Thursday, without providing official reasons for the decision.
The announcement did not include further details regarding the background of the dismissals. However, similar decisions have often been linked to corruption investigations, in line with established practices in China, amid the continuation of the anti-corruption campaign launched by President Xi Jinping more than a decade ago.
In recent years, several military officials have been targeted as part of efforts to reform and modernize the armed forces. Analysts say the campaign reinforces discipline within state institutions. The dismissals are not expected to significantly affect the annual session of the National People’s Congress, which is scheduled to last for one week.
