Concern in America about riots

Fears abounded in the United States of the outbreak of violence and riots in conjunction with the holding of the midterm elections in the United States, next week, especially after the attack on the husband of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Democrat Nancy, in their home.

And US security officials have said that unrestrained disinformation and political criticism fuel attacks, such as the one in which a right-wing conspiracy theorist apparently sought to kidnap Nancy Pelosi over alleged electoral “lies”.

According to US reports, the attacker, David Debaby, who is accused of assaulting Pelosi’s 82-year-old husband, spread conspiracy theories on his website about election fraud, Covid vaccines, climate change, the Holocaust and transgender people in schools.

The attack came a week before the midterm congressional elections, and at a time when politicians and poll workers reported an increase in threatening and intimidating messages. Among them, in Arizona, are armed men patrolling near polling booths, worrying people trying to vote.

On Friday, the day the attack on Pelosi’s home occurred, US security agencies issued a warning that domestic violent extremists posed an “increasing threat” as the November 8 vote approached.

“Perceptions of election fraud and responses to violence against women to divisive topics are likely to lead to planning for violence against women and broader efforts to justify violence in the lead-up to and after the 2022 midterm elections,” the agencies said in a joint intelligence release.

In Arizona, tensions over the “alleged theft” of the 2020 presidential election were particularly high – gunmen carrying video cameras appeared near the polls.

The Justice Department said in a filing to the Federal District Court in Arizona, where it filed a lawsuit on the matter, that such actions “raise serious concerns of voter intimidation.”

Jane Easterly, the US government’s top cybersecurity official, said Sunday that there is a “very complex threat environment” helped by rampant disinformation and “threats of harassment, intimidation and violence against election officials, polling stations and voters.”
