Dense Fog Returns to Florida: Weather Warnings and Official Explanations

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued warnings about dense fog in several areas of Florida, particularly near Jacksonville and Tallahassee, from Tuesday until Wednesday morning, after residents in various areas reported that the fog appeared unusual, with an unfamiliar smell. Some also reported health symptoms, such as coughing, sore throat, eye irritation, and fatigue.

Local Interpretations

Some residents shared photos of the fog on social media, expressing concerns that it might be caused by undisclosed activities. Others linked it to previous experiments, such as the 1950 “Operation Sea Spray” that tested the effects of biological agents in major cities.

Official Explanations

The National Weather Service denied any signs of abnormal activity, clarifying that dense fog is a natural phenomenon during this time of year. Experts suggested that the smell might be caused by existing air pollutants, which become more noticeable in humid conditions. Authorities also warned of reduced visibility to less than one nautical mile in some areas until Wednesday morning, urging drivers to exercise caution while driving.

Previous Fog Appearance

The state experienced similar fog in December, which residents described as having a metallic odor, and now the phenomenon has returned, raising new concerns.
