Details of the Phone Call Between the Iraqi Prime Minister and the U.S. Secretary of Defense

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani discussed regional security developments, strategic partnership, and mutual interests with U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.

According to a statement from the Iraqi Prime Minister’s Office, Al-Sudani received a phone call on Sunday from Hegseth, during which they discussed the Iraq-U.S. strategic partnership and their shared commitment to regional stability and security.

The two officials also addressed recent U.S. strikes on Yemen. Hegseth stated that the U.S. would continue its military operations if the Ansar Allah movement persisted in attacking American forces and disrupting Red Sea navigation.

Al-Sudani emphasized that dialogue remains the best approach to resolving Middle Eastern crises, reaffirming Iraq’s commitment to addressing regional challenges through diplomatic means.

He also reiterated Iraq’s commitment to protecting international coalition advisors present in the country upon the Iraqi government’s invitation to support efforts against ISIS. Additionally, he affirmed Iraq’s policy of ensuring that only state institutions wield military force to maintain internal stability.

The statement also noted that discussions covered the situation in Syria, with both sides agreeing to prevent ISIS from becoming a renewed threat, especially after it acquired new weapons and began reorganizing its ranks.
