Detection of the second human infection with avian influenza virus

The World Health Organization announced the diagnosis of a four-year-old child in the state of West Bengal in India with the H9N2 strain of bird flu.

The child was admitted to the intensive care unit at a local hospital due to severe respiratory problems, high temperature, and abdominal cramps. He was discharged from the hospital after three months of diagnosis and treatment.

The patient came into contact with poultry in his home and in the surrounding areas, but none of the family members or those in contact with him reported respiratory problems.

During the decades since its discovery, the bird influenza virus of all types has remained confined to poultry, but the World Health Ministry recently monitored the transmission of the infection from birds to humans in several different cases, which raises concerns about the possibility of its subsequent transmission between humans.
