Dr. Edmond Melhem – Understanding SSNP’s Role in Syria’s Anti-Terror Efforts – part 6

The SSNP’s presence in Syria

1- The SSNP is an influential party in Syria and, according to some, the second most influential party after the Ba’ath Party. Its presence dates back to the early days of its establishment in the 1930s. Currently, the party is represented in the parliament by five members from different electorates.[1] Its members are drawn from all denominations, walks of life, and districts of Syria. The party is active on all fronts: political, cultural, social, and military. It has a strong presence among students and within universities. According to the party, students have significant potential and play a vital role in the national endeavour.

The party’s engagement on different military fronts is simply to protect the sovereignty of Syria and its territorial integrity and to defend the Syrians from terrorist threats. Fighters of the SSNP, known as Nusur al-Zawba’ah, protected many of their towns and residential neighbourhoods against terrorist forces who have been killing civilians and destroying the country. They have been fighting alongside the Syrian army repelling the terrorists’ attacks in the countryside of Latakia and Homs, particularly near the town of Sadad; They have also been fighting in the as-Suweida province in southwestern Syria close to the Jordanian border, in Dara’a province in southwestern Syria and in Sahl al-Ghab and around the city of Mahardeh in the countryside of Hama province. .
