Egypt grants citizenship to a new group of Syrian citizens.

The Egyptian government announced a decision by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly to grant Egyptian citizenship to a new group of individuals. The decision included 11 people, among them 9 Syrian citizens, a Dominican born in Damascus, and a Sudanese national. This was published in the official gazette issued today, Wednesday.

A large number of Syrians have been living in Egypt over the past years. As of October 2023, Syrians constituted the largest group of refugees in Egypt, before Sudanese nationals took the lead. According to the UNHCR, the number of registered Syrians in Egypt reached approximately 145,000 refugees by the end of January. However, community estimates suggest that the actual number is much higher.
