In one of the most thrilling and chaotic El Clásico matches, Barcelona secured a historic 4-3 victory over Real Madrid in the 35th round of La Liga at Montjuïc Stadium, moving a significant step closer to clinching their 28th league title.
Barcelona’s dramatic comeback in the first half
Real Madrid started strong, opening the scoring early through their French star Kylian Mbappé, who capitalized on a defensive error and won a penalty in the fifth minute, successfully converting it past goalkeeper Szczęsny.
Madrid maintained their pressure, with Vinícius Júnior intercepting the ball and assisting Mbappé for a second goal in the 14th minute.
However, Barcelona did not back down and began to dominate the match, taking advantage of Madrid’s defensive retreat. They intensified their attacks through wingers Lamine Yamal and Martin Gierard. Eric García managed to score Barcelona’s first goal after heading in a rebound from Ferran Torres, who later assisted Yamal for the equalizer in the 32nd minute.
Barcelona continued their offensive push, with Brazilian Raphinha dispossessing Lucas Vázquez before passing to Pedri, who set up Raphinha for the third goal in the 34th minute.
In a similar scenario to his previous goal, Mbappé attempted a quick response for Madrid, earning another penalty in the 44th minute, but VAR intervened and overturned the decision due to offside.
Barcelona capitalized on the moment with a swift exchange between Ferran Torres and Raphinha, leading to Torres scoring the fourth goal in the 45th minute, ending the first half with Barcelona ahead 4-2.
Madrid’s attempts in the second half
Real Madrid entered the second half with a more balanced approach after coach Carlo Ancelotti introduced Luka Modrić and Brahim Díaz into midfield. Vinícius Júnior broke the offside trap once again, assisting Mbappé for his hat-trick goal in the 70th minute.
Mbappé nearly equalized in the 90+2nd minute, but his goal was ruled offside, keeping Barcelona ahead 4-3.
In the 90+6th minute, substitute López almost extended Barcelona’s lead with a fifth goal after dribbling past Madrid’s defense, but VAR disallowed it due to a handball, sealing Barcelona’s 4-3 victory. With this win, German coach Hansi Flick triumphed over Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti in their fourth El Clásico encounter.
Barcelona strengthens its lead
With this victory, Barcelona increased its tally to 82 points, solidifying its position at the top of the standings, while Real Madrid remained at 75 points in second place, with only three rounds left in the season.
