Following a Series of Traffic Incidents in Egypt, President El-Sisi Orders Nationwide Road Safety Campaigns
The Egyptian Ministry of Interior has announced the launch of intensified traffic campaigns across roads and highways throughout the country, in response to directives issued by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. The move comes in the wake of a series of serious road accidents that have sparked widespread public concern.
Speeding and Driving Without Licenses Among Most Common Violations
Within a 24-hour period, the campaigns resulted in the detection of 73,704 traffic violations, including:
• Driving without a valid license.
• Exceeding speed limits.
• Illegal parking.
• Using mobile phones while driving.
• Violating vehicle licensing regulations.
Increased Surveillance on the Regional Ring Road After Two Major Accidents
The Ministry has intensified its presence on the Regional Ring Road, particularly in sections under maintenance, where two recent major accidents have occurred. In this area alone, 744 traffic violations were reported, such as:
• Driving against traffic.
• Unauthorized passenger transport.
• Technical violations related to vehicle safety and roadworthiness.
• Authorities also reported seizing seven vehicles for non-compliance with traffic laws.
Drug Testing: 48 Drivers Found Under the Influence
As part of the nationwide campaign, the Ministry conducted drug screening tests on 355 drivers, with 48 individuals testing positive for narcotic substances. In addition, 36 individuals with a total of 136 court rulings against them were apprehended.
Public Outcry Following Monufia Accident Shifts Focus to Regional Road Safety
The measures follow a fatal accident in Monufia Governorate, where a collision between two buses on the Regional Ring Road resulted in 10 deaths and 12 injuries. The incident occurred in an area undergoing maintenance work.
A separate accident the previous week claimed the lives of 18 female passengers and their bus driver after a heavy transport truck traveling in the wrong direction collided with their vehicle. The truck driver was later found to be under the influence of drugs.
Presidential Directives: Closing Unsafe Road Sections and Strengthening Enforcement
In light of these recurring accidents, President El-Sisi instructed the government to:
• Close sections of the Regional Ring Road currently undergoing upgrades or repairs.
• Provide safe alternative routes for travelers during the closures.
• Take strict legal measures against traffic law violators.
Intensify road monitoring efforts, particularly concerning speeding and vehicle overloading, to enhance public safety
