France’s Aoun can help demarcate the border with Israel

Lebanese President Michel Aoun announced that the French company “Total” could help his country in the process of demarcating the maritime border with Israel.

This came, according to a statement by the Lebanese presidency, quoting Deputy Speaker of Parliament Elias Bou Saab, after his meeting with President Aoun.

Bousaab said that he placed Aoun “in the atmosphere of the recent contacts that took place with the American mediator (Amos) Hochstein, who will visit Lebanon at the end of this week, considering that his visit “does not mean that it carries the final solution, but it is an additional positive step towards the solution.”

After his meeting with President Aoun, Minister Bousaab said: I placed the President in the atmosphere of the recent contacts that took place with the American mediator Hochstein, who will visit Lebanon at the end of this week. And his visit does not mean that it carries the final solution, but it is an additional positive step towards the solution.

The Deputy Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament also touched on newspaper reports about the possibility that the American mediator’s visit to Beirut this time might hold the keys to the solution, saying: “Everything said in the media is inaccurate…there are points that are still outstanding, because the issue is thorny and complex, but it is moving in the right direction.” .

For his part, he continued, by saying: President Aoun drew attention to a third party that could help Lebanon in the solution, which is Total, and he will make contacts to help in this regard… and communication will increase during the current month.

Bousaab also called for not being overly optimistic or pessimistic, noting that “things are moving at an acceptable pace and (September) is a critical month, and we hope to reach the desired result, and we are keen to preserve Lebanon’s rights by all means.”

On the first of this September, the Hebrew newspaper quoted unnamed sources as saying that the American mediator arrived in Paris to hold talks with President Emmanuel Macron about the role of the French drilling company “Total”, which is supposed to drill in the disputed field between Israel and Lebanon.

Also, “Total Energy” had previously signed an agreement with Lebanon to explore in Area No. 9 in the disputed Mediterranean waters with Israel.

Negotiations between Lebanon and Israel to demarcate the maritime borders mediated by the United States began in 2020, where Lebanon initially announced its possession of about 860 square kilometers (332 square miles) of water, but it modified the offer to include an additional 1,430 square kilometers that includes the part of the Karish gas field, which it claims Israel completely refuses to discuss Lebanon’s conditions around it.

Where the issue of demarcation of maritime borders is of great importance to Lebanon in the field of energy exploration, as this country has been suffering from a suffocating economic crisis for years that has significantly affected the energy sector throughout the country.
