French German Correspondence

Today, Thursday, the Russian Foreign Ministry published diplomatic correspondence between Minister Sergey Lavrov and the Foreign Ministers of France and Germany, regarding the possibility of holding a new meeting in the Normandy format.
This Russian move came in response to false information and news that had been published on this issue by other countries about Moscow’s position on holding a meeting in the Normandy format.

“Recently, Russia’s position and role in the Ukrainian internal settlement and the directions for a possible ministerial meeting in the Normandy format have been distorted. To prevent further speculation, the Russian Foreign Ministry decided to publish and disclose the sources,” the ministry said in a statement.

The statement added, “Moscow is awaiting the reaction of Paris and Berlin to the publication of Lavrov’s correspondence with Maas and Derian and what needs to be talked about about Russia’s preparations for the Normandy format negotiations.

It is noteworthy that on November 8, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov rejected a proposal from Berlin and Paris to hold a meeting of foreign ministers of the countries participating in the Normandy format on November 11.

The minister explained that this is impossible, firstly because of his timetable and secondly because Moscow’s proposals on the final document of the meeting have not been answered, stressing that Russia is interested in the substantive aspect of the issue and not in “a show of pride.”

The last summit was held in Paris on December 9, 2019, where the parties agreed on steps to resolve the conflict, but the ceasefire was not achieved.
