G20 Meeting Opens in South Africa Amid Absence of Several Leaders

The G20 Summit kicks off today in Johannesburg, South Africa, marking the first time the event is held on the African continent, with several major world leaders absent, including U.S. President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Chinese President Xi Jinping, as well as the presidents of Argentina and Mexico.
The summit, according to host South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, focuses on solidarity, equality, and international sustainability, discussing ways to ease the debt burden on emerging and developing countries, ensure a fair energy transition, promote responsible use of rare minerals, and fairly share the responsibilities related to climate protection and food security.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called on G20 members to use their influence to help end conflicts worldwide, at a time when political disputes persist regarding the participation of certain countries. This includes the Trump administration’s boycott of the talks over allegations concerning South Africa’s policies toward white farmers, which the South African government has fully rejected.
