Gold Injections in the Eye: A Promising Vision-Preserving Technology

A recent study conducted on mice in the United States has revealed that injecting gold into the eye could be an effective treatment for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and other vision-related disorders.

Macular degeneration affects millions of people worldwide and becomes more likely with age, leading to blurry vision and other sight problems.

Bioengineer Jiarui Ni from Brown University in Rhode Island stated:
“This is a new type of retinal implant technology with the potential to restore vision lost due to retinal degeneration, without the need for complex surgery or genetic modifications. We believe this technique could revolutionize the treatment of retinal degeneration.”

How Does the New Treatment Work?

The treatment involves combining ultra-small gold nanoparticles—thousands of times thinner than a human hair—with antibodies that target specific cells in the eye. These particles are then injected into the vitreous chamber, the gel-filled space between the retina and the lens.

Next, a small infrared laser device is used to activate the gold nanoparticles, stimulating the targeted cells in the same way light-sensitive cells in the retina would normally function.

The therapy was tested on genetically modified mice with retinal disorders, and it showed partial restoration of vision, at least to a measurable degree (complete visual tests are challenging in mice), according to the scientific website Science Alert.

Ni explained the results:

“We showed that the nanoparticles can remain in the retina for several months without significant toxicity, and we demonstrated that they can successfully activate the visual system. This is highly encouraging for future applications.”

Path Toward Human Use

As with most animal studies, there is a strong possibility that the results could be translated to humans. However, it will likely take some time before the technique reaches a level of safety and effectiveness that health authorities can approve.

This nanogold injection treatment could mark a breakthrough in managing macular degeneration and other retinal diseases, offering a non-invasive and more accessible alternative for patients suffering from vision loss.
