Gold Prices Climb Above $4,070 as Investors Weigh U.S.-Iran De-escalation Efforts

Gold prices rose more than 1% during Tuesday trading as investors turned to safe-haven assets while assessing diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions between the United States and Iran. At the same time, a decline in oil prices helped ease some inflation concerns, reinforcing investor expectations regarding the path of U.S. monetary policy.

Spot gold climbed 1.6% to $4,071.59 per ounce as of 07:50 GMT, while U.S. August gold futures rose 1.5% to $4,076.00 per ounce.

The rally came after markets repriced geopolitical risks in the Middle East amid indications of diplomatic moves that could pave the way for a temporary de-escalation. That shift was reflected in energy prices, inflation expectations, and investor bets on upcoming Federal Reserve policy decisions.

Gold Seeks to Establish Support Above $4,000

Ilya Spivak, Head of Global Macro at Tastylive, said gold “appears to be trying to establish a price floor around the $4,000-per-ounce level before resuming another upward move.”

“The news coming out of the Middle East appears to be having some impact, although market attention remains relatively short-lived.”

Spivak added that investors continue to closely monitor geopolitical developments, but the sustainability of gold’s gains will depend on whether regional tensions persist and how they influence expectations for U.S. interest rates.

Oil Retreats Despite Ongoing Middle East Tensions

Meanwhile, oil prices declined as markets balanced reports of mediation efforts between the United States and Iran against continued exchanges of attacks between the two sides, along with threats by Yemen’s Houthi movement to impose a maritime blockade on Saudi Arabia.

A senior Iranian official told Reuters on Monday that Tehran had received a proposal from mediators calling for a 10-day ceasefire aimed at preserving the temporary agreement and creating conditions for reaching a permanent deal to end the conflict.

Federal Reserve Expectations Keep Gold in Focus

Gold’s advance followed a volatile session in energy markets, where the latest developments in the Middle East pushed oil prices on Monday to their highest levels in more than a month, reviving concerns over persistent global inflationary pressures.

Investors remain concerned that any sustained increase in energy prices could complicate the Federal Reserve’s efforts to return inflation to its target, potentially prompting policymakers to keep interest rates higher for longer.

Higher interest rates generally increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets such as gold. However, heightened geopolitical risks typically strengthen demand for the precious metal as one of the market’s primary safe-haven assets during periods of uncertainty.

Markets Await Next Week’s Federal Reserve Decision

Despite ongoing uncertainty, markets broadly expect the Federal Reserve to leave interest rates unchanged at its meeting scheduled for next week.

According to CME Group’s FedWatch Tool, traders currently assign a 64% probability that the U.S. central bank will raise interest rates at its September meeting, while continuing to monitor inflation data, labor market indicators, and geopolitical developments.

Markets are closely watching for signals that could determine the timing of the Fed’s next policy move, as the path of interest rates remains one of the primary drivers of gold, the U.S. dollar, and global financial markets.

Other Precious Metals Post Broad Gains

The rally extended to other precious metals, with spot silver rising 4.5% to $58.96 per ounce.

Platinum gained 2.3% to $1,630.21 per ounce, while palladium advanced 2.8% to $1,288.02 per ounce.
