Google Maps Supports Trump’s Decision and Updates the Name of the Gulf of Mexico

Google has announced a name change for the “Gulf of Mexico” to “Gulf of America” for users of its Maps service in the United States. The company stated that it follows a long-standing policy of updating geographical names when they are officially changed by government sources.

According to the Associated Press, although Google made this adjustment for users in the U.S., those outside the country still see the old name alongside the new one in parentheses, as the name change was made unilaterally by the United States.

In a statement, Google confirmed that its standard practice is to display the locally recognized official names within each country, while showing both names globally in cases of international discrepancies. Meanwhile, users in Mexico will continue to see the original name, “Gulf of Mexico.”

It is noteworthy that former U.S. President Donald Trump issued an executive order to rename the gulf in honor of “America’s greatness,” according to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names. In response, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that “The Gulf of Mexico will remain as such for us and for the entire world.”
