The Greek government announced the reinforcement of the security presence at the borders of Turkey, after this region witnessed increased tensions last year, as thousands of migrants tried to sneak into the territory of Greece.

Greece’s Citizens Protection Minister, Takis Theodorikakos, indicated during a visit to the Kastanies region in the far northeastern Evros province that Athens will deploy 250 new border guards to support the police units deployed there.

During the visit, Theodoricakos inspected the 37-kilometre-long security fence that Greece built at the border. This comes against the backdrop of the remaining differences between Turkey and Greece, two NATO allies, in the eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean Sea.
