Handala Nears Gaza Shores — What Fate Awaits in the Coming Hours?

Handala Ship Approaches Gaza Amid Calls for Protection and Hunger Strike Warnings
The International Committee for Breaking the Siege on Gaza and the Freedom Flotilla Coalition announced that the vessel “Handala” is now approximately one nautical hour away from the shores of the Gaza Strip, in a multinational effort to challenge the naval blockade imposed on the territory.
According to a statement from the organizers, those on board the ship intend to begin an open-ended hunger strike if the vessel is subjected to any attempt of interception. The statement called on the international community to ensure the safety of the crew and secure the ship’s safe passage to its destination.

An Israeli Heron drone is actively circling the #Handala.
We are currently at coordinates N 31.990316° E 32.802406°, 90 NM from Gaza and beyond the point where the #Madleen was illegally intercepted.
We must demand immediate action for Gaza.

The statement clarified that the journey is not merely symbolic but represents a “collective act of solidarity” with Gaza’s residents amid ongoing humanitarian challenges and the continued blockade. It added: “We are fully aware of the risks, but the people of Gaza cannot afford to wait.” Social media accounts affiliated with the flotilla reported intermittent surveillance by an Israeli drone flying over the ship.
The “Handala” set sail from the port of Gallipoli, Italy, on July 20, following a previous delay during which technical preparations for the voyage were completed.
According to the organizers, the vessel carries messages of solidarity from international communities and symbolic letters from within the Gaza Strip, particularly from children, expressing the hardships faced by the population and calling for an end to the blockade and accountability for those responsible for its continuation.
Further official updates and statements are expected in the coming hours, as sponsoring entities continue to closely monitor the situation.
It is worth noting that the Israeli military had previously intercepted the “Madleen,” a ship affiliated with the Freedom Flotilla, on June 9 after it reached approximately 184 kilometers off the Gaza coast.
