WHO Marks World Hepatitis Day 2025: Simple Steps Toward Elimination

On 28 July 2025, the World Health Organization (WHO) will observe World Hepatitis Day under the theme: “Hepatitis: Simple Steps to Eliminate It.” The initiative calls for practical measures to overcome barriers to care, including financial, social, and systemic challenges, as well as efforts to reduce stigma associated with the disease.

Alarming 2022 Statistics

An estimated 304 million people were living with chronic hepatitis B or C.

Only 45% of newborns received the hepatitis B vaccine within the first 24 hours of birth.

Approximately 1.3 million deaths worldwide were attributed to chronic hepatitis B and C.

Expanding Access to Care, Vaccination, and Treatment

The WHO emphasizes that chronic hepatitis B and C often progress silently, potentially leading to liver damage and severe complications such as liver cancer. Despite this, both types are preventable and treatable, with hepatitis C being curable in many cases.

This year’s theme underscores the need to simplify health services related to hepatitis by:

Expanding early childhood vaccination programs.

Ensuring safe injection practices.

Enhancing harm reduction strategies.

Increasing testing and access to early treatment.

Integrating hepatitis-related services into national healthcare systems to ensure sustainability and effectiveness.

A Global Target: Hepatitis Elimination by 2030

The 2025 campaign seeks to raise public awareness and encourage policymakers to accelerate public health interventions aimed at eliminating hepatitis as a global health threat by 2030.

The WHO reiterates that now is the time to implement concrete steps that improve access to prevention and treatment services, contributing to a future free from hepatitis and its complications.
