Instagram New Update Sparks User Backlash Over Interface Redesign

The Instagram new update has sparked a wave of controversy among the platform’s more than two billion active users worldwide. The latest redesign introduces major changes to the app’s interface and bottom navigation bar, leaving many users frustrated by the altered experience.

Navigation Bar Overhaul Frustrates Users

Meta’s photo-sharing platform has completely reorganized its bottom navigation bar, which previously offered easy access to the home feed, search, post creation, Reels, and profile sections.

With the Instagram new update, the search and Reels icons have swapped places, the post creation button has been removed from the center, and a direct message (DM) icon now takes its place. The “+” post button has been relocated to the top-right corner of the screen.

Swipe Gestures Now Trigger Unintended Actions

Users can no longer tap the bottom bar to upload a new photo, and side swipes now switch between the Home, Reels, and Messages sections — often unintentionally.

One user complained on X (formerly Twitter): “I try to swipe to see another photo in a post, and suddenly I’m on a completely different page!”

Such issues have made the Instagram new update a major source of frustration for many.

New Experience, Divided Opinions

The redesigned layout allows users to navigate through sections as if they were browser tabs. However, this feature has confused many because the same swipe motion is also used to browse multi-photo posts.

While Meta claims the Instagram new update aims to make the app more dynamic and unified, many users argue it sacrifices the simplicity that once defined the platform.

From Photo App to Video-Centric Platform

Since its launch in 2010, Instagram has evolved from a simple photo-sharing app into a short-video-driven platform, especially after Meta acquired it in 2012.

The Instagram new update appears to be another step in that direction, positioning the app to better compete with TikTok’s dominance in the short-form content space.
