The Israeli army announced it has expanded its deployment within what it described as a “security zone” in southern Lebanon, to a depth of approximately 10 kilometers inside Lebanese territory. This comes as attention turns to the future of the southern Lebanon front following the electronic signing of a memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, which ended more than 100 days of confrontation between the two sides and opened the door to a new phase of negotiations on multiple files.
The Israeli army stated in a release that it is deploying “according to operational needs” inside the security zone, confirming that its forces continue to work to remove threats and enhance protection for residents of northern Israel, while Israeli military operations continue in southern Lebanon despite political developments related to the US-Iran understanding.

In this context, US President Donald Trump said during remarks on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France that the ongoing war between Israel and Hezbollah remains smaller in scale compared to the broader confrontation with Iran, calling for focus on the political track that followed the understanding between Washington and Tehran.
Trump’s Remarks Open Debate on Syria’s Role.. Will Beirut Request Damascus’ Support?
Trump’s remarks regarding the possibility that Syria could take on the file of Hezbollah sparked wide political and media debate, after he said that Damascus might be better able to handle this file.
However, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa had earlier affirmed that his country does not intend to intervene in Lebanese affairs, stressing the priority of stability and normal relations between the two countries, and announcing the postponement of discussion on contentious files such as border demarcation in favor of focusing on economic cooperation and development.
Officials and analysts speaking to various media outlets also confirmed that any potential Syrian role in Lebanon remains contingent on a formal request from the Lebanese state and within recognized legal and sovereign frameworks.
Hezbollah at the Heart of the Next Phase of Negotiations
With the US-Iran understanding entering the implementation phase, the Hezbollah file emerges as one of the most prominent files related to regional stability in the coming period.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that ending the war in Lebanon forms part of any broader settlement related to the recent confrontation with Iran, including addressing outstanding security and military issues between Lebanon and Israel.
Observers believe that this approach reflects the connection of the Lebanese arena to the new regional arrangements that have begun to take shape following the agreement, at a time when Washington seeks to solidify the understanding with Tehran and prevent the region from sliding into a new confrontation.
Israel Holds Firm to Its Security Positions
In response, Israel affirms the continuation of its military operations in Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza, with Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz saying that his country will not withdraw from these arenas at the present time, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continues to emphasize that security considerations will remain a priority for the Israeli government.
These positions come amid Israeli reports of ongoing consultations between Tel Aviv and Washington regarding the repercussions of the US-Iran understanding and its implications for regional files, foremost among them Lebanon.
A Testing Phase for the US-Iran Understanding
As the Israeli deployment in southern Lebanon continues and military operations persist on the ground — despite a notable decrease in their number — the coming weeks appear to be a practical test of the US-Iran understanding’s ability to contain regional tensions.
