Escalation in Daraa: Israeli shelling, Abidin displacement, gunfire during incursion

Israeli incursion in Syria: airstrikes and warplane overflights in southern Syria, and Israeli media reports of gunfire at a force without casualties, amid continued tension in the western Daraa countryside

The western countryside of Daraa in southern Syria witnessed new military escalation, after the village of Abidin in the Yarmouk Basin was subjected to artillery shelling and Israeli airstrikes, coinciding with an Israeli force’s incursion into the area, while Israeli media reported that one of its forces came under fire with no casualties recorded, as local sources spoke of displacement of some residents due to field developments.

Shelling and airstrikes on Abidin village

Local sources said Israeli forces shelled the village of Abidin in the western Daraa countryside with a number of artillery shells, with shells landing inside the town, coinciding with Israeli warplanes carrying out two airstrikes targeting the surrounding area.

The sources added that warplanes continued to fly over the skies of Daraa and Quneitra provinces, amid escalating military activity in southern Syria, with no confirmed information on the extent of human or material losses from the shelling and airstrikes.

The sources indicated that field developments prompted a number of residents of Abidin village to leave the town toward neighboring areas, amid a state of tension among residents.

Ground incursion and military checkpoints

In parallel with the shelling, Syrian media reported that an Israeli force consisting of five military vehicles entered Abidin village, coming from the Al-Mughr area, and set up two checkpoints on the road leading to Jamla village.

The sources added that the force stopped passersby, including children, and searched them, also preventing civilians from leaving Abidin toward Jamla, and fired shots into the air, with no reports of casualties or arrests.

They also reported that residents of the village blocked some roads leading to Abidin using stones, in an attempt to prevent any new incursion, while flare bombs were launched in the skies of the Yarmouk Basin.

Israeli media: gunfire at a military force

In response, Israel’s Channel 12 said that gunmen opened fire toward an Israeli army force operating inside what it described as the “security zone” in Syrian territory.

The channel added that the incident resulted in no casualties among the Israeli force, without providing additional details about its circumstances.

Later, local sources reported that Israeli forces renewed their artillery shelling on Abidin village after clashes broke out during attempts by residents of the area to confront the Israeli force’s incursion, also saying that Israeli helicopters opened fire with machine guns toward the town, coinciding with continued displacement toward neighboring villages.

Syrian Foreign Ministry statement

In the same context, the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates condemned, in a statement issued today, the Israeli military operations in Quneitra and Daraa provinces, including ground incursions and artillery shelling, considering them a “flagrant violation of Syrian sovereignty and a new breach of international law, the UN Charter, and the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.”

The ministry affirmed that the continuation of these practices “undermines efforts to establish security and stability, increases the suffering of civilians, and portends further escalation,” calling on the United Nations and the international community to “assume their responsibilities and take measures to ensure respect for the agreement and safeguard Syrian sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

These developments come amid continued security tensions in southern Syria, particularly in the Daraa and Quneitra countryside, where the region is witnessing military operations and repeated field movements.

Israel continues to carry out military operations in southern Syria, including incursions, shelling, raids, arrests, and land leveling, without adhering to the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.
