Japan officially announces its joining the list of countries that have refunded UNRWA

The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the resumption of its funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), in a press interview presented by Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa, in which she pointed to the organization’s indispensable role.

Minister Kamikawa said that Japan will lift the freeze on its financial contributions to the agency, and that $35 million of previously scheduled funding is ready for disbursement.

Japan was among 16 countries, led by the United States of America, that announced their suspension of funding for UNRWA earlier this year due to Israeli allegations that employees of the agency were among Hamas members who participated in the October 7 attack. The amounts that were frozen were estimated at about 450 million dollars. Meanwhile, the European Commission, Canada, Australia, Finland, and Sweden announced the resumption of funding for the organization due to the absence of evidence of the Israeli accusations.
