Jordanian Intelligence Announces Arrest of Security Cell — What’s Lebanon’s Involvement?
The Jordanian General Intelligence Directorate announced on Tuesday the foiling of “complex terrorist plots” aimed at undermining national security, spreading chaos, and carrying out acts of sabotage within the Kingdom.
According to an official statement, the plans included recruiting individuals inside Jordan and training them abroad, as well as projects to manufacture missiles and drones, and the possession of explosives and firearms intended for domestic operations.
The statement confirmed that 16 individuals were involved and had been arrested following intensive intelligence surveillance since 2021. All suspects have been referred to the State Security Court for legal proceedings.
Details of the Plots
Jordanian Minister of Government Communications revealed that members of the cell are facing several charges. In the first case, three individuals were involved in smuggling and storing explosives and automatic weapons from abroad. One of the suspects hid a Katyusha rocket in the Marj Al-Hamam area, ready for use.
In the second case, a three-member cell worked on locally manufacturing missiles using both domestic and imported components. They established two warehouses—one in Amman and another in Zarqa—with one of them fortified with concrete and containing hidden rooms.
The third case involved another cell that successfully developed a prototype drone, after receiving technical support and expertise from foreign parties.
In the fourth case, the focus was on recruiting and training individuals abroad as part of a long-term plan to target Jordan’s internal security.
Muslim Brotherhood Under Scrutiny
Meanwhile, Jordanian media quoted security sources suggesting the possible involvement of members of the Muslim Brotherhood in these plots. However, the group has denied any connection to the accused individuals.
Lebanon Expresses Solidarity
In a related development, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati held a phone call with his Jordanian counterpart, Jaafar Hassan, expressing Lebanon’s full solidarity with Jordan. According to an official statement, Mikati affirmed Lebanon’s readiness to cooperate fully with Jordanian authorities, stressing that Lebanon firmly rejects the use of its territory for any activity that threatens the security of brotherly nations.
