Yesterday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov received the head of the Lebanese Progressive Socialist Party, Walid Jumblatt.
During the conversation, the developments of the situation in Lebanon were discussed in detail. At the same time, the parties expressed concern regarding the deep socio-economic crisis taking place in that country, according to the statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The Russian side reiterated its firm position in support of Lebanon’s sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity. The two sides also stressed the need to resolve intractable issues on the national agenda on the basis of mutual consensus between the leading Lebanese political and sectarian forces exclusively in the legal field and without external interference.
When discussing the topic of the Middle East, Lavrov stressed Russia’s firm commitment to achieving a comprehensive and sustainable settlement of regional disputes through political and diplomatic methods in accordance with the existing international legal framework. Particular attention was paid to issues of facilitating the return of Syrian refugees to their homes.
Some substantive aspects of the multifaceted Russian-Lebanese cooperation were also discussed.
