Layoff Campaign in America Affects NASA
The American space agency (NASA) announced that it is in the process of laying off a group of its employees, including the agency’s chief scientist. This step is considered the first phase of a wave of employee dismissals, which will be followed by additional rounds, aimed at reducing federal budget expenditures that U.S. President Donald Trump is working to achieve.
A NASA spokesperson stated on Tuesday that this initial round of cutbacks involved 23 employees, noting that further rounds are forthcoming.
Among those let go was the agency’s chief and renowned climate expert, Catherine Calvin, who was appointed by former President Joe Biden in 2022 and played a major role in preparing important United Nations reports related to climate.
It is worth mentioning that Donald Trump announced a series of measures targeting the scientific community, including severe budget cuts and the dismissal of hundreds of employees from federal agencies responsible for climate and health.
And thanks to American billionaire Jared Isaacman, who was chosen by Donald Trump to be the next head of the space agency, NASA has so far managed to avoid the severe cuts affecting other federal agencies due to last-minute intervention.
