The United States opened the scoring early in the fourth minute with a header from Chris Richards, one of their few opportunities in the first half. However, Mexico quickly gained control and equalized in the 27th minute through veteran striker Raúl Jiménez (34), following a precise through ball from Marcel Ruiz.
Mexico’s captain, Edson Álvarez, a midfielder for West Ham United, scored the winning goal with a powerful header in the 77th minute, securing the match against a US team missing several key players.
After scoring the equalizer, Jiménez honored his former Wolverhampton teammate, the late Portuguese player Diogo Jota, who died last week along with his brother André in a car accident in Spain. Jiménez wore a jersey bearing Jota’s number 20 and name as a tribute.
The final was held in front of a large crowd of approximately 71,000 spectators at NRG Stadium in Houston. This marked the eighth time Mexico and the United States have met in the tournament final. Both teams, along with Canada, are preparing to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
