Egyptian Military Moves to Mogadishu – Diplomatic Rift Between Cairo and London Amid Allegations Against the Muslim Brotherhood
A senior Egyptian military delegation arrived at Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu, including high-ranking officers and special units, ahead of deploying 1,091 Egyptian troops as part of the African Union Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
Somali military sources stated that the delegation will establish the necessary logistical foundations in coordination with local authorities to facilitate troop deployment. The Somali Ministry of Defense welcomed the move, describing it as an expression of Cairo’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s security and enhancing the national army’s capacity to confront Al-Shabaab.
This deployment follows a series of Egyptian military shipments to Mogadishu in 2024, which included light weapons, artillery, and anti-tank missiles, alongside the training of 3,000 Somali soldiers in Cairo since 2023. These developments occurred after Egypt signed a defense cooperation agreement with Mogadishu in August 2024, amid rising tensions in the Horn of Africa, particularly with Ethiopia over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which Egypt considers a potential threat to its water security.
Cairo – London: Diplomatic Rift and the Muslim Brotherhood in Focus
Meanwhile, Egyptian-British relations are facing a growing crisis following attacks on Egyptian embassies in several European countries, including London, Amsterdam, and New York, for which Cairo attributed responsibility to groups linked to the Muslim Brotherhood. Tensions intensified after Egyptian nationals were detained in the UK during protests near the Egyptian Embassy in London, prompting media campaigns in Cairo calling for “reciprocal measures.”
The dispute escalated when Egyptian authorities removed security barriers surrounding the British Embassy in Cairo, to which London responded by temporarily closing its embassy due to security concerns. Observers described this as an indicator of declining trust between the two countries, amid calls for dialogue to prevent further escalation of the diplomatic crisis.
The 1961 Vienna Convention remains the primary legal framework regulating diplomatic relations, stipulating in Article 22 the inviolability of mission premises and requiring the host state to take effective measures to ensure their security.
