Morocco Reopens Its Embassy in Damascus After More Than 12 Years of Closure
In a notable diplomatic development, the Kingdom of Morocco has reopened its embassy in the Syrian capital, Damascus, more than 12 years after it was closed in 2012 at the onset of the Syrian crisis.
The Moroccan News Agency reported on Thursday, July 10, that the embassy officially resumed its operations last Sunday. It has returned to providing full administrative services, supported by a complete diplomatic and administrative staff.
According to the agency, the embassy is currently operating from its previous location on a temporary basis, pending the completion of preparations at a new site. The new location is expected to reflect a fresh phase in Moroccan-Syrian relations, which the agency described as experiencing a “renewed dynamic” in recent months.
This Moroccan step comes amid significant shifts in the relationships between several Arab countries and Damascus—particularly following the formation of Syria’s new transitional administration—marking a gradual end to years of diplomatic estrangement.
