Mystery Surrounds the Arrest of Italian Journalist in Iran, Raising Global Questions

Iran Confirms Arrest of Italian Journalist Cecilia Sala Amid International Calls for Her Release..

Iran has confirmed the arrest of Italian journalist Cecilia Sala on December 19 for “violating the laws of the Islamic Republic,” according to the Iranian state news agency IRNA. The Ministry of Culture stated that her case is under investigation and that the Italian Embassy was notified immediately after her detention.

The Italian ambassador visited Sala in prison to verify her condition, while she has not yet been allowed to meet with a lawyer, according to Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, who expressed hope for a resolution soon.

Sala works for “Il Foglio” and “Chora Media” and was in Iran with a legal journalist visa to report on the country. The editor-in-chief of “Il Foglio” declared that “journalism is not a crime,” urging for her release.

“Chora Media” explained it had remained silent about the arrest at the request of her family and Italian authorities to ensure a swift resolution. The case has sparked international debate about press freedom and journalists’ safety in Iran.
