Nabih Berri Rejects Tom Barrack’s Remarks on Lebanon
Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri, expressed his rejection of statements made by U.S. envoy Tom Barrack regarding the Lebanese government, army, and Hezbollah, describing them as contradictory to previous positions. Berri emphasized that the Lebanese Army represents a central element in defending the country’s territory, sovereignty, and internal stability, and stated that its arms are not a tool for internal conflict.
Nabih Berri also called on Lebanese citizens to remain united under the current circumstances, stressing that any potential targeting by Israel of a region or group in Lebanon affects all citizens, and that responding to such threats is a national responsibility. He reiterated Lebanon’s commitment to the ceasefire agreement in effect since November 27, highlighting the army’s deployment alongside UNIFIL up to the international border in southern Litani.
Barrack’s Statements
U.S. envoy Tom Barrack previously stated that Israel would not withdraw from the five points in southern Lebanon, and that Lebanon fears Hezbollah’s disarmament could trigger internal conflict. Nabih Berri added that the group reportedly receives up to $60 million monthly, and claimed that Lebanese authorities have so far taken no practical steps. Barrack described the Lebanese Army as capable but insufficiently equipped, urging the government to announce plans to disarm Hezbollah and assume associated responsibilities.
