In a significant political development on the European stage, conservative candidate Karol Nawrocki has won Poland’s 2025 presidential election, defeating his liberal rival Rafal Trzaskowski, who was backed by the European Union. At 42 years old, Nawrocki has a background in history and boxing and is known for his socially conservative views. He advocates for the preservation of Christian values and opposes deeper federal integration within the European Union. Nawrocki has also conditioned Ukraine’s potential EU and NATO membership on its recognition of the Volhynia massacres and has demanded World War II reparations from Germany.
His victory represents a political setback for Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who has sought to steer Poland in a more liberal direction. With presidential veto powers at his disposal, Nawrocki is expected to challenge Tusk’s legislative agenda, potentially resulting in a political deadlock until the next parliamentary elections in 2027.
Nawrocki’s election was welcomed by nationalist leaders across Europe, while several EU officials expressed concern over its implications for the future of EU-Poland relations.
